There are 12 non food items that are added to your food that have possible health effects. This week we’ll cover nitrates (sodium nitrate or nitrite.) This additive is used in processed meats such as salami, hot dogs, pepperoni, ham, and bacon. It is used to preserve color and inhibit botulism. Science has linked this preservative to cancer of the colon, breast, prostate, and pancreas. The World Health Organization believes nitrates to be a carcinogen. Always check your labels.
